To draw this Manga Boy (Full Body), follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. Take your time and draw at your own pace.
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a small circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the top part of the manga boy's head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a button.
On the bottom, left side of the circle, draw an angled line for the lower part of the manga boy's head. The top part of this guide should be short and curved. The side should be flat and the bottom should curve up and to the right back toward the circle. Pay attention to the length of this guide in relation to the circle. This will be the guide for the jaw and chin.
Step 1b: The height of a young boy will be roughly six heads tall. That means that however tall you drew the head, his proportionate body should be about six of those same-sized heads stacked up on top of each other. A younger boy's body would be fewer heads in height. An average full grown man's body would be seven or eight heads high, depending on how tall you want to draw him.
Drawing six head can be tedious, so you can just roughly estimate what six head is or make horizontal marks all the way down to help you determine the height. You can also use a ruler for a more accurate measurement.
Step 2: Half way between the top and bottom of the head, draw a long horizontal line as a construction guide that will help you place the boy's facial features later. Below the head, draw a two short vertical lines as guides for the neck. The line on the left should curve more and it should be slightly shorter than the line on the right.
Step 3: Directly under the neck draw a small circle as a guide for the top part of the boy's chest. Pay attention to how small the circle is in relation to the head. The bottom of this circle should be pretty far away from the mark for two heads high.
Step 4: Below the small circle, draw a long, curved line for the bottom part of the boy's chest This line should resemble the letter U that's tilted a bit. Notice that the bottom of this U-shaped line grazes the line for two heads high.
Step 5: Far down below the chest, draw another circle as a guide for the lower part of the manga boy's torso. This circle should be intersected in the middle by the mark for three heads high. This circle should be about the same size as the circle for the head.
Use two curved lines to connect the circle to the chest and create the guide for the middle of the torso. The line on the right will be the line for the back and it should be longer than the line on the right. The line on the left will be the line for the stomach.
Step 6: Below the lower torso, draw two long, curved vertical lines for the top part of the boy's legs. The lines get closer to each other at the bottom so that the thigh at the top is wider than the bottom. The bottoms of these lines should be below the mark for four heads high. On the bottom end of the lines, draw a small circle as a guide for the knee. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the top of the leg. Don't draw it too big.
Step 7: Under the knee, draw a couple more lines as guides for the lower part of the boy's leg. The line on the left should be pretty straight. The line on the right should curve out to the right before curving back in to the left. The mark for five heads high should come across the middle of these lines.
Under the leg, draw a small triangular shape as a guide for the foot. Make the left side of this shape pointy. Pay attention to how long the shape for the foot is in relation to the rest of the leg. The bottom edge of the foot should be at the bottom-most mark for the head-height.
Step 8: Inside the top circle for the chest, draw an even smaller circle as a guide for the boy's shoulder. Below this circle, draw two lines as guides for the top of the boy's arm. Don't draw these lines too far apart. At the bottom end of these lines, draw another circle as a guide for the elbow. The circle for the elbow should be a bit smaller than the circle for the shoulder. The circle for the elbow should be very close to the edge of the big circle for the lower half of the torso.
Step 9: Below the elbow, draw two long, curved lines as a guide for the boy's forearms. Make the top sections of the forearms wide and the bottoms narrow for the wrists. The bottom edge of the forearms should be along third head-height-mark. Notice how the lines for the forearms slope to the left toward the front of the leg. Below the wrist, draw a small, oval-like shape as a guide for the hand. The left edge of the hand should graze the side of the leg.
That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing. Remember to keep your overall body shape at about six heads high. If you used lines as guides for the head height, you can erase them at this point.
This tutorial focuses on how to draw a boybody, so for a more detailed, step-by-step explanation on how to draw a boyhead (side view), check out this tutorial: How to Draw a Manga Boy Head (Side View). Once you complete the head, continue below to step 10.
Step 10: Darken the outer edges of the shapes that make up the boy's arm. Curve the shapes at the elbow so that the arm isn't too pointy. Darken the top edge of the small initial circle for a bit of the boy's shoulder.
Step 11: Darken the oval-like shape at the bottom of the arm to create the manga boy's hand. Along the bottom edge of the shape, draw three short, curved lines to separate the fingers. The thumb isn't visible from this angle, so don't draw it.
Step 12: Darken the sides of the initial guides to create the top of the boy's torso. Curve the line in the front a bit to emphasize the pectoral muscle. Darken the line on the left for the back but don't overlap the shape of the arm.
Step 13: Draw two curved, horizontal lines across the lower part of the torso for the underpants. The line on the bottom should curve more than the line on the top. Don't overlap the shape of the forearm as you draw these lines. Darken the sides of the initial guides for the rest of the manga boy's lower torso.
Step 14: Darken the outer edges of the initial shapes below the torso for the boy's leg. Curved the lines near the middle to create the knee section. Curve the line under the knee, on the left side, to create the calf muscle. Make the bottom of the shape right before the foot narrow.
Step 15: Darken the shape at the bottom for the boy's foot. Make the line curvier at the bottom for the foot's sole. Draw a line on the top, right side of the foot for the ankle. On the left tip of the foot, draw a few tiny, curved lines to separate the toes.
Step 16: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.
That's it! Keep practicing until you get the body and proportions right. Draw it again and again and eventually you'll get better!
